It all comes down to story. What is the core? Who are the players? How much is to be revealed versus how much needs to be discovered?
I relish my role in telling each story visually. What fascinate me are the differences between telling stories through motion and through stills. Where one almost always involves a large crew, with each member contributing equally important pieces, the other can be a solitary mission, a single connection existing between subject and photographer.
The collaborative nature of the motion picture industry drew me in to a world I instantly recognized as my home, populated with people as restless and spirited as myself. I’m Iowa-born yet global minded, and feel fortunate to have found a job/career/passion that feeds my curiosity and will do so the rest of my days.
I love all styles of cinematography and photography, especially documentary, but can completely lose myself when shooting live music, almost to the point I don’t hear the music anymore. That is not a bad thing, you see. Because of my intent on capturing the story playing out before me, I feel the music more than hear it. And isn’t that the whole point?
